“Our Kids,” which is a non-profit organization was formed in 1987 with Warren Mervyn as president and the late Bob Helsel as vice president. Bob came up with the name and the idea for the organization, which fits what we stand for. The children that this organization helps are the children of our community that fall short of funds for educational functions, class trips, field trips, registration fees for sports, sports equipment, etc. A committee screens the children who received funds from “Our Kids” and everything is kept confidential so that no child needs to feel embarrassed. We strive for all children in our community to have an equal opportunity to do educational things.
The organization has grown to include two $500.00 scholarships a year, more if we can afford it. This is called the Bob and Marie Helsel Scholarship Fund. We also have a scholarship named after a local Green Beret, the late SFC Mark W. Jackson.
“Our Kids” has assumed responsibility for the “Glennie-Curtisville News” which is our local newspaper that is sent our once a month to keep residents of the community informed about what is going on in our area. This is free to all local residents.
We support ourselves with fund raisers during the year, an annual Golf Scramble, raffles, a Comedy Show put on by our local “Backwoods Boys”, Bingo, etc. We also accept and appreciate donations.
