Island Lake is a small, sheltered lake in an area of rough, crater strewn terrain. Although cottages and cabins surround the lake, it is quiet as motors are not permitted on the lake. The campground has a nice beach and a self-guided nature trail. 17 campsites.

The nearest communities are Rose City, about 7 miles south and Mio, about 10 miles north. With easy access, Loon Lake Picnic Area provides both picnicking and swimming opportunities for day use. Nestled mostly in National Forest land, Loon Lake provides a wide variety of wildlife and opportunities for recreation. There is an ample swimming beach; however, there is no boat launch.
