In the winter of 1868-69, William E. Rogers, Albert Molitor and Frederick Denny Larke came to the area to lumber. Mr. Molitor built a cabin, a dock and a mill on the shore, just to the north, on Lake Huron, and that was the start of Rogers City. It was named for William E. Rogers, owner of the land on which the village was laid out by his partner, Albert Molitor. It was given a post office as Rogers' Mills on September 23, 1870, the name was changed to Rogers City in January 1872, the to Rogers on January 22, 1895, and then back again to Rogers City on January 25, 1928. Incorporated as a village in 1877 and as a city in 1944. Rogers City is located on the Lake Huron coastline and is the county seat for Presque Isle County. Rogers City is home to the largest limestone quarry in the world. It’s limestone processing plant made Rogers City one of the major ports on the Great Lakes. The marina comes alive in the summer as sail boaters visit the community. Several seasonal “nautical theme” gift shops, restaurants and resorts attract tourists to the area. P. H. Hoeft State Park provides accommodation for campers. Photo courtesy of Enchanted Forest Web Page Design Service.

Forty Mile Point Lighthouse, Lighthouse Park, 7323 US 23 N, Rogers City, MI 49779, Phone: (989) 734-4587. Forty Mile Point Lighthouse is located on the northern shoreline of Lake Huron in Presque Isle County’s Lighthouse Park, Rogers City, Michigan. At a cost of $25,000, the station was completed by the end of 1896. Its 4th Order Fresnel lens has been a welcoming beacon to sailors since May 1897 and is still operating today. In 1996, the 40 Mile Point Lighthouse Society began restoring the lighthouse, outbuildings and grounds. Several years ago, the pilot house from the Steamer Calcite, built in 1912 and the first self-unloading steamer on the Lakes, was relocated to the reservation. The Society, with the help of many retired Great Lakes sailors, has also restored and preserved this structure. The park is open to the public year-round. The lighthouse and complementary buildings are open noon to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday from Memorial Day weekend through mid-October. Group tours can also be arranged.

Thompson's Harbor State Park [Wildlife Viewing Area] - Closest Town: Rogers City. Michigan Department of Natural Resources (989) 734-2543. From Rogers City, take US-23 east about 12 miles to the park entrance on the left (north) side of the road. There are no facilities or improvements at this rustic state park that includes 7 miles of Lake Huron shoreline. Primitive hiking trails wander throughout the second growth forest, sand dunes, and limestone cobble beaches of this site. Visitors are also encouraged to bring a map and compass and explore the “uncharted” portions of the park. Much of this park’s Lake Huron shoreline is covered with cobblestones that have been rounded by centuries of wind and wave action. Fossils of ancient plants and animals are common on these unique cobble beaches. Please leave the fossils behind for others to find and enjoy. There are more than 3 miles of hiking trails and old survey roads that provide access to the park’s undeveloped interior. Hike these trails in late May and June to see beautiful spring wildflower blooms. The rare dwarf lake iris may be seen in late May along the trails and on the shoreline just west of Observatory point. Bald eagles, black bears, coyotes, and white-tailed deer all call this site home.
