The oldest permanent settlement in the Grand Traverse Area, this picturesque village near the tip of the Old Mission peninsula was founded in 1839 by the Rev. Peter Dougherty as a mission to the native Indians. Today it is a resort area, reminiscent of a New England town, with several well-preserved churches, homes, stores and other 19th century buildings that are still in use. The peninsula has extensive cherry orchards and vineyards. There are seven vineyards, but only five have tasting rooms. Because of the remoteness of the peninsula, wine tours take some planning.[1] It is an American Viticultural Area and a center of the Michigan wine industry. Black Star Farms, 360 McKinley Rd. East, Old Mission, Traverse City, MI 49686, Phone: (231) 944-1300. Our Old Mission location welcomes you for complimentary wine tasting. The tasting room boasts a full round bar constructed from nine oak wine barrels, a cozy fireplace and wine proudly on display. Open daily year round—please call ahead for seasonal hours and group tours. Black Star Farms Old Mission is an extension of the Black Star Farms in Suttons Bay. We specialize in serving wines made from 85% of grapes or other fruit grown on the peninsula—giving you a truly local experience! Our winery produces varietal wines of high character, acidity, and balance. Fruit is sourced from both our own vineyards and local grower partners. This diversity allows us to obtain consistent quality across vintages. Our wines reflect this care from the premium Arcturos, and Leorie Vineyard varietals to our sparkling, fruit, and ice wine. Many are award winners and all represent the best efforts of our skilled winemaking team.
