Oceana County is located in the western part of the lower peninsula, bordered on the west by Lake Michigan and traversed by US-31. The county contains 541 square miles and is the 64th largest in the state. The county seat is Hart. About 40 percent of the land is in farms in the heart of the state's fruit belt. Manufacturing includes food processing and fabricated metal products.
Principal Attractions and Events
The Manistee National Forest covers 530,000 acres in the county. Other state parks, lakes, and recreation areas offer hunting, fishing, boating, and other outdoor activities. Lake Michigan and Silver Lake with sandy beaches and dunes; Charles Mears State Park, Pentwater; Silver Lake State Park; recreational harbor facilities at Pentwater on Lake Michigan; Silver Queen river boat rides, Mears; Mac Woods' Dune Rides, Silver Lake; Little Point Sable Lighthouse; Val-du-Lakes outdoor concert arena; Shelby Gemstone Factory; Oceana County National Asparagus Festival; numerous arts and crafts fairs (in Shelby and Hart in mid-June and in Pentwater in early July).
