Michigamme, Michigan

Michigamme is situated on the northwest shore of Lake Michigamme, the village limits are on the border of Marquette and Baraga Counties.  Jacob Houghton, a brother of Dr. Douglas Houghton, Michigan's first state geologist and surveyor, is credited with founding the village of Michigamme. Natives of the town say the name 'Michigamme' means "streaked waters", but another source says it is the Chippewa word for "large lake".  The movie “Anatomy of a Murder” was filmed in Michigamme.  The town's first building was a log cabin built on the shore of Lake Michigamme (Great Lake) for the mining engineers.  The Michigamme Mining Company platted the village in 1872 and settlement immediately began.  John C. Powle became its first postmaster on January 20, 1873.  Incorporated as a village in 1873.  After the mine was exhausted in 1905, the town began to dwindle. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D. Craig Lake is known for its Muskellunge, Bass, Walleye and Northern Pike fishing. Teddy Lake has an excellent fishery for Smallmouth Bass. King Lake: Northern Pike, Perch, Crappie Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass.
