The city of Charlevoix, located on Lake Michigan and is the county seat for Charlevoix County.  The village was incorporated in 1879 and became a city in 1905. Charlevoix has one of the few remaining draw bridges still operating in the downtown area. The US Coast Guard Cutter Acacia is based in Charlevoix. Beaver Island ferry provides access to Beaver Island from Charlevoix.  A colony of fishermen by 1852.  John S. Dixon bought land here in 1854 and in 1864 had a large dock built. In 1878, resort associations began to plan and settle the site, leading to its incorporation as a village, with Mr. Dixon as president, in 1879, and as a city in 1905. Authentic net shed built in 1906 houses memorabilia from the days when St. James harbor was teeming with commercial activity. The museum tells the story of busy days in the harbor. Also includes the Protar home which housed the doctor from 1893 until his death in 1925. He lived by the land and never accepted money for helping his neighbors illnesses. He is laid to rest on the west side of his home.
