Bear Lake is located on highway US-31 in west central Manistee County.  This village on Bear Lake was first settled by Russell F. Smith in 1863 and most of it was platted on land which he sold to the brothers George W. and David H. Hopkins. Their business interests developed the village which they platted in 1874.  Jerome Hulbert became its first postmaster on April 27, 1856. Incorporated as a village in 1893.
