Lake Linden is located on highway M-26 in northern Houghton County. Population: 1,203. First settled in 1851. The Beasley brothers, Alfred and James, opened a public house here in 1853. The village was the outgrowth of the Calumet & Hecla mining interests, their stamp mills locating here in 1867. A station on the Hancock & Calumet Railroad. First called Torch Lake from its location near the head of Torch Lake, it was renamed from the linden trees lining the lake. Incorporated as a village in 1885. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
