North Central Michigan College Natural Area [Hiking & Snowshoe Trail], 1515 Howard Street, Petoskey, MI 49770, Phone: (231) 348-6812. Scenic trail borders the beautiful Bear River and a northern cedar swamp. Some loops can have tricky hills and trail is narrow in spots. Wonderful snowshoe trail. Rolling terrain. Outer trail is approx. 3 miles around, 12 kilometers total, 3 loops. Parking at the Student Resource & Community Center.

Loda Lake Wildflower Sanctuary [Hiking Trail, Wildlife Viewing], 650 North Michigan Avenue, PO Box Drawer D, Baldwin, MI 49304, Phone: (231)745-4631.  The Loda Lake Wildflower Sanctuary consists of a small lake, a marsh and wooded area. There are over 150 different species of plants, wildflowers, trees and vegetation marked with posts that correspond to the trail guide available. The trail is about 1.5 miles long.

Sand Lake Quiet Area Pathway [Biking & Hiking Trails, Wildlife Viewing], Pere Marquette State Forest, Island Lake Road & Campground Road, Kalkaska, MI 49646, Phone: (231) 922-5280.  One of the most popular natural areas in northwest Michigan. 10 miles of hiking, biking and cross-country skiing. Hiker trailhead located at Guernsey Lake State Forest Campground. Skiing trailhead 5.5 miles SE of Williamsburg via M-72 & Broomhead Road. Offers several miles of pristine trails that wind around many scenic little lakes that dot the preserve. Many of the skier-tracked trails cross over frozen lakes, which are also popular with local ice fishermen. Wildlife is abundant.
