Cross-Country Skiing

Avalanche Preserve Recreation Area [Biking, Hiking, Ski Trails], 1129 Wilson Street, Corner of Lake & Ann Streets, Boyne City, MI 49712, Phone: (231) 582-6597.  Avalanche is a 300 acre nature preserve where you may find berries, mushrooms and much more... Hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails. Skating, sledding, jogging and snowmobiling. Disc golf. Ungroomed trails range in difficulty from flat terrain for novices to steep inclines for experienced skiers. 9 kilometers, 4 loops.

Big M Trail [Bike & Ski Trail], East Udell Hills Road, Huron-Manistee National Forest, Wellston, MI 49689, Phone: (231) 723-2211.  Deep in the heart of the hardwood and pine forest of the Udell Hills. A rustic area without many amenities. The trail offers a variety of terrain to challenge every biking and skiing experience level. Many scenic vistas. 30 km of groomed and well marked trails. The Big M is one of the first great Nordic trail systems in the U.S. It was professionally developed in the early 1950's.

Bowman Lake Area [Hiking & Skiing Trails], Seventh Street (52nd Street), Baldwin, MI 49304, Phone: (231) 745-4631. Bowman Lake Area offers a variety of recreational opportunities, such as hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, fishing, canoeing, camping and much more. Glacial depressions and unique vegetation are found in this area and provide homes for many species of wildlife. Experience solitude & closeness to nature in a natural environment.

Cadillac Pathway [Bike, Hike & Ski Trail], Boon Road (34 Mile) & Seeley Road, Cadillac, MI 49601, Phone: (231) 775-9727.  An 11.3 mile groomed ski, hike and bike trail with six loops. Marked and groomed for novice and intermediate cross-country skiers. Trail maps are available.

Fred Meijer White Pine Trail State Park [Biking, Hiking, Skiing & Snowmobile Trail], 211 W. Upton Avenue, Cadillac, MI 49601, Phone: (231) 775-7911. This linear trail state park is 92 miles long. An 88-mile section is open from Cadillac to Belmont. The trail surface is natural ballast and hard packed gravel, with 14 miles of asphalt pavement from Reed City to Big Rapids and 7 miles of asphalt pavement from just north of Rockford to Belmont. An 88-mile section is open from Cadillac to Belmont. This trail provides a scenic flat route through Michigan's countryside and winds through Morley, Stanwood and Paris.

Little Traverse Conservancy [Nature Preserves], 3264 Powell Road, Harbor Springs, MI 49740, Phone: (231) 347-0991. The Little Traverse has established more than 100 nature preserves in Emmet, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Mackinac and Chippewa counties, each open to the public at no charge. Many have nature trails for hiking, cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. Beach access is also available, as well as birdwatching, fishing and similar low-impact activities. HUNTING IS ALLOWED ONLY ON DESIGNATED PRESERVES AND WITH WRITTEN PERMISSION ONLY. A guide to our preserves is available by phoning or writing.

Missaukee Mountain [Downhill & Cross-country Skiing], 6500 W. Walker Road (M-66), Lake City, MI 49651, Phone: (231) 839-7575.  We have 4 runs with 500' vertical drop. Terrain Park and trails for snowboarding. Cross-country trails. Sledding, snowshoeing, instruction and a ski shop. Open weekends & school holidays.

Mt. Holiday - Mountain:  12 slopes, 2 chairlifts, 2 T-bars, 5 rope tows, snowmaking.  Vertical Drop: 200 feet.  Facilities:  cross-country trails, rentals, lessons, restaurant and lounge.

Mt. McSauba Recreation Area, [Ski Trails] corner of McSauba and Pleasant Street, North Pointe, Charlevoix, MI 49720, Phone: (231) 547-3267.  Mt. McSauba Park offers excellent family skiing and is only about a half-mile from town. Three loops, from one to six kilometers long, suitable for novice to advanced - from flat ground to steep hills. One loop is lighted. We have a warming lodge with a snack bar, ski and snowboard rental, three rope tows, five downhill skiing runs and cross-country skiing. Lighted cross-country ski trails and a lighted sledding hill are available.

Pere Marquette State Forest Pathway [Biking, Hiking & Skiing Trail], 8015 Mackinaw Trail, Cadillac, MI 49601, Phone: (231) 775-9727

Pine Valley Pathway [Biking, Hiking & Skiing Trail], M-37 & Seven Mile Road, Baldwin, MI 49304, Phone: (231) 775-9727.  Groomed ski, hike, bike trail. This trail is 8.2 nonrepeating miles with a series of loops that allow for several options. It is perfect for the beginner or intermediate skier.

Sand Lakes Quiet Area [Biking, Hike & Cross-country Ski Trails, Wildlife Viewiing, Broomhead Rd., Williamsburg, MI 49690, Phone: (231) 922-5280. This serene site is part of the Pere Marquette State Forest. Motorized vehicles are prohibited, making this area a great place to watch wildlife, hike, bike, or cross country ski.
