Hartwick Pines State Park

Herman Vogler Conservation Area [Hiking & Ski Trails], Off US 23 on Birchwood Drive, Rogers City, MI 49779, Phone: (989) 734-4000. The HVCA contains more than seven miles of trails, all used by hikers, cross-country skiers, hunters and nature lovers. Four main trails run along Trout River and are beginner, moderate and challenging. The trail system traces a path through a constantly changing blend of habitats that range from hardwood highlands to cedar thickets and marshes.

First Street, City Hall, Alpena, MI 49707, Phone: (989) 54-4158.  A 17 acre Island jewel surrounded by the Thunder Bay River which winds through 500 acres of water, low islands and waterfowl. Several paths lead joggers, walkers, photographers, fishermen, nature lovers through varied eco systems including sand dunes, meadows, woodlands, gentle slopes, marsh areas. Has viewing platform (handicapped accessible).

Walk over 1/4 mile of boardwalks that will take you out into this fresh water coastal marsh. Observe a variety of wetland creatures from three separate observation decks, each providing its own special view. A very knowledgeable staff is available by appointment to explain and guide you on your tour. Open May 1 to October 31, small admission fee is charged, children under 12 free.
